The proliferation of artificial intelligence applications, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, brings with it significant environmental concerns, particularly in the areas of water and energy usage. A single 100-word email generated by ChatGPT consumes approximately 519 milliliters of water. This seemingly small consumption scales up dramatically when considering widespread usage.

For instance, if about 16 million working Americans use ChatGPT to draft one 100-word email weekly for a year, the aggregate water usage would exceed 435 million liters. This amount of water is comparable to the daily water usage of the state of Rhode Island over one and a half days, underscoring the environmental footprint AI data centers are leaving.

Water consumption further varies depending on the location of the data centers. Regions such as Washington state and Arizona, with their distinct climates, demand more water for operating these centers. Consequently, the environmental toll becomes even higher in these dryer regions, affecting local water resources significantly more than in more temperate areas.

Electricity Consumption and Broader Implications

In addition to water usage, the electricity consumption of ChatGPT is another major environmental consideration. Generating a 100-word email takes about 0.14 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity. This amount of energy could keep 14 LED light bulbs lit for one hour, highlighting the high energy demands of these AI operations.

When viewed on a larger scale, the cumulative electricity usage becomes even more staggering. If one in 10 working Americans uses ChatGPT for email once a week over the course of a year, the total energy consumed would be 121,517 megawatt-hours. This is roughly equivalent to the energy usage of all households in Washington, D.C. for a period of 20 days.

The demand for cooling data centers plays a significant role in the high water and energy consumption. Cooling towers, which are essential to prevent server overheating, consume vast amounts of water, adding to the local and global environmental burden. Increasing demands exacerbate the ongoing drought conditions in arid regions, thereby straining local water resources even further.

Future Projections and Corporate Responses

With AI technology rapidly advancing, the future projections for data center energy and water demands are concerning. Experts predict that by 2030, data center demand could account for up to 9% of total electricity generation in the United States. Such statistics indicate a dire need for more sustainable practices within the AI industry.

Some corporations, including Microsoft and OpenAI, are actively working to increase efficiencies and lessen their environmental footprint. However, there remains a significant call for greater transparency regarding the water and power usage involved in AI operations. While strides are made in corporate responsibility, experts suggest that detailed disclosures could help users make more informed decisions about their AI usage.

Moreover, the societal and economic impacts of AI resource consumption cannot be overlooked. High resource usage leads to increased tensions between data centers and local communities over water and power, potentially driving up utility costs and increasing the risk of blackouts. These issues can erode consumer trust and pose long-term sustainability challenges for businesses relying on AI technologies.
